“BERLIN IS IN GERMANY”
BY HANNES STÖHR (2001)
In partnership with Stray Cat Film Center and as part of the Year of German-American Friendship, Goethe Pop Up Kansas City is proud to present its What’s left? Films from former East Germany series – six films spanning nearly four decades of filmmaking that examine life in former East Germany. Hosted and curated by Dr. Larson Powell, a film scholar and Professor of Film Studies at UMKC, this series features films from East Germany and also recent films about its history that showcase characters experiencing everyday struggles with gritty realism, ironic understatement and comical stories.
Running from March until June and held every other Wednesday at Stray Cat Film Center, Dr. Powell will introduce each film and lead discussions afterward concerning the film’s content and contexts, its relation to film history, and its artistic form and style. Each film will be shown in German with English subtitles, and admission is free and open to the public. Join the Pop Up Film Haus for an exploration of this significant part of Germany’s national and cinematic history.
